Let’s talk about thoughts this week!
What is a thought?
A synaptic connection the brain that releases chemicals in the body that vibrate or cause us to feel emotions.
One athlete asked me this week what she should do with bad thoughts.
She said something like, “I have a tendency to have thoughts that I don’t like. I wish I didn’t have so many bad thoughts. What can I do?”
Here is what I would offer regarding bad thoughts.
A lot of athletes are afraid of thinking negative or bad thoughts.
What is scary about a neurological connection?
Oftentimes, athletes try to shake their head in an attempt to get rid of a “bad thought” or quickly dismiss the thought or push the thought away mentally.
I’ve been told by athletes, “I’m afraid if I think about something that I don’t want to have happen, then it might happen.”
Here is my question, “What if there were no bad thoughts?”
What if you put thoughts in the circumstance line?
Is it true that everyone has thoughts? Yes!!!
About 40-60 thousand thoughts everyday.
We would all agree in a court of law that we all have thoughts.
Now, if you put thoughts in circumstance line of the CTFAR model, then what makes those thoughts good or bad is simply what you make those thoughts mean about you, about your sport, about your life.
Not the thought.
Thoughts aren’t bad or good, they are just thoughts.

Here’s a Challenge for you this week:
Find a video about what makes a thought! There are hundreds if you do a quick search online.
It’s pretty fascinating. Like I said before, they are electrical currents between cells or neurons
Now, what you think about a thought makes you feel good or bad. If this is true, then, you get to decide if there truly are good and bad thoughts.
I would offer that there is no thought to be feared, just the choice you make about what you want that thought to mean for you or against you. Is it a useful thought or not?
Maybe if you think, “I wish I didn’t have that thought,” you might feel bad.
If you feel bad about thinking you “wish you didn’t have a certain thought,” you might continue to repeat that thought over and over, obsessing over the thought and spinning it around in your mind.
Even if that thought does go away eventually, it usually pops up more readily another time which will continue to bother you.
So, maybe you could think about thoughts with curiosity.
The next time you have a thought that you want to be mad about or think is a “bad thought”, I would challenge you to try asking yourself, “Huh, I wonder why my brain offered me that thought?”
Then question if the thought is true, or if you really want to entertain it.
There is nothing wrong with the thought.
You can choose to be fine with the thought or dismiss some as not valuable for your current life goals.
With curiosity as the main response to any thought, the thought won’t seem like a big deal and you may feel empowered instead.
A thought is just a thought and never has any power over you.
You can feel liberated from thinking it’s a problem.
Instead of thinking a thought is a problem, you can realize it’s just a neutral situation and you can make a choice from that point about how you want to describe that thought.
Thoughts have no power over you unless you want them to.
