APPROVAL

GET OUT OF THE CHALK BOX

I went to the store to purchase some groceries the other day. On the receipt, I noticed the word APPROVAL. And the funniest thing happened, I felt great inside and found myself smiling with delight. My step was a little lighter and I bounced out the store. Why?

Well, because I was “Approved” by the little machine spitting out receipts.

Weird right?

I chose think that machine was totally right! I am approved by the machine so that must be enough! I am enough because I believed the machines validation.

I laughed at myself when I noticed how I felt by my thoughts about this machine. But, they were not negative thoughts so why not allow myself the enjoyment of feeling approval.

This is not a problem right?

Approval is great. But, only matters if we approve of ourselves without the need for external approval.

If the machine had said ‘DENIED’, guess how I might have felt?

Nothing.

Why?

Because that little machine cannot and will never be able to make me feel anything!

I get to choose at all times what I want to feel. I get to choose if the word on a receipt that says “DENIED” matters to me or not.

The machine will never be in control of how I feel about me.

When an athlete is more concerned about the approval of judges, coaches, teammates, or parents, then that athlete is not capable of competitive at the best version of themselves.

Approval based sports is not sustainable and ultimately leads to feelings of disappointments, failure, and resentment.

P.S. I am a confidence coach for competitive and professional athletes. I teach tools that open up the impossible goals in a way that allows minds to consider & think of as possible. That make those dreams they fall asleep too at night become a reality. I use cognitive science based tools and evolutionary psychology as my foundation.
